Outside of a Demarcus Robinson spike game, things weren’t pretty for the Baltimore Ravens offense in their 13-3 victory over the Carolina Panthers.
They were worse for Carolina. The Panthers averaged less than 4.0 yards per play, and QB Baker Mayfield averaged less than 5.0 yards per pass attempt from a clean pocket in his return to the starting lineup.
Baltimore was able to get enough from its run game in the second half (6.3 yards per carry) to extend to 7-3 on the season off their bye week.
Offensive spotlight: With Rashod Bateman sidelined for several weeks with a foot injury, Baltimore needs someone to step up and complement Mark Andrews in the passing game. Today, that was Demarcus Robinson.
The former Kansas City Chief brought in all nine of his targets for 128 yards and six first downs in a game where Baltimore struggled to move the ball through other outlets. Those six receiving conversions for Robinson set a career-high for a single game in his career, surpassing his previous high-water mark of five in a 2019 game against the Raiders.
Defensive spotlight: The Panthers had been able to lean on D’Onta Foreman and their run game in recent weeks, but that wasn’t the case today. Carolina averaged just 2.1 yards per carry with fewer than 10 rushing yards before contact on their 17 carries. Patrick Queen was a big part of Baltimore’s success against the run, notching seven total tackles in run defense with an average depth of just one yard downfield. Six of those tackles qualified as run stops — tied for most of any defender in the early slate of games on initial review.
Rookie spotlight: Kyle Hamilton left the game in the third quarter with a knee injury, but he was continuing his recent strong stint of play prior to leaving. Hamilton was listed as the primary coverage defender on four passes, and he allowed just three receptions for two yards on those plays. Hamilton will likely finish with his fourth consecutive PFF game grade over 75.0 after final review, and the Ravens will hope to have him back for the stretch run after climbing to 7-3 on the season.
Offensive line spotlight: Lamar Jackson took four sacks in the game, but Baltimore’s offensive line did a very good job of keeping Carolina’s pass rush at bay for most of the game. Jackson was pressured on just seven of his 37 dropbacks. Only five of those pressures — and two of the sacks — were charged to the offensive line.
That success will feel like a moot point if there isn’t good news on the injury that forced tackle Ronnie Stanley out of the game. Stanley had gotten back to playing at an elite level off the injuries that cost him most of the 2020 and 2021 seasons, allowing just three pressures on 146 pass-blocking snaps this year.
